Quick answers about who we are, what we do, and how you can be part of it.
What is Cultural Health Connect?
Cultural Health Connect (CHC) is a community nonprofit based in El Cajon, California. We provide free, evidence-based health education on preventing and managing chronic diseases—like type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure—tailored to the cultures, languages, and foods of the Middle Eastern and Mexican communities of East County San Diego.
Who can use your resources?
Anyone! While our materials are designed with the Middle Eastern and Mexican communities of El Cajon in mind, the guidance is grounded in research that applies broadly. All of our materials are free and available in English, Spanish, and Arabic.
Do you give medical advice?
No. We share general health education based on published research and guidance from trusted organizations like the CDC and the American Heart Association. We do not diagnose, treat, or prescribe, and our content is never a substitute for advice from your doctor. Always talk with a qualified health provider before making changes to your medications or treatment plan.
What does "moderation over elimination" mean?
It's the heart of our philosophy. Instead of telling people to give up cherished foods like biryani, kabsa, tamales, or pan dulce, we help families enjoy them in healthier ways—through smaller portions, fiber-rich sides, smart ingredient swaps, and movement after meals. Sustainable habits beat strict rules that no one can keep.
How does the Health Assistant on this website work?
The Health Assistant is a free chat tool that answers common questions about healthy eating, physical activity, sleep, and stress management in English, Spanish, and Arabic. Its answers come from the same evidence-based educational content we publish. It provides general education only—it is not a medical professional, it doesn't know your personal health situation, and it should never replace a conversation with your doctor.
How can I volunteer or partner with you?
We'd love your help! We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds—healthcare professionals, translators, designers, community organizers, and neighbors who simply care. Local businesses, clinics, and community centers can also partner with us to distribute materials or host future workshops. Send us a message on our Contact page and we'll get back to you.
Do you accept donations?
We are not accepting monetary donations at this time. The most valuable things you can give us right now are your time, your expertise, and your voice in the community. Visit our Support page to learn how to help.
Are your materials really free?
Yes—everything we publish is completely free. You can download our multilingual health pamphlet from the Resources page, share it, print it, and distribute it in your community.
